Proas are good 4 sailing, and that's about it, ha ha...
A lumpy Black Sea, like a Bentley on air she takes it on... So smooth, so gentle, it's Crystal Clear, Proas are kind, strong and cheap.
A battle machine, made to take on the sea, not fight it, rather go with it, flex with it, ride with it...
Time is nothing but a reference, the sea is everything! it rules... At sea, the sea is time... It will tell you the time, it will give you your right of passage...
Proas may be forgiving, yet they are very demanding, these craft are the strongest of multies, the fastest of monos, but they will scare you!
with limited mobility, entering and exiting tight places could become very exciting...
An open water vessel, that demands you understand it, for it will ...

      We sleep on deck in a tent when we come in, at sea there is one bunk inside, and one hand on deck... It's a lumpy sea here, bashing the hulls shaking the wind out of the rig. Still I've been sailing only to windward ... Off the wind I believe she will get going Dave. I'm sorry I got alarmed by how hard it was Shunting on land, so I cut the masts down and reduced SA from 20 to 18 square meters, at sea she shunts well, so that was a mistake.... Oh well.... Yet I still haven't sailed in blow.... Keep Shunting Dave

    It looks like you have been sailing to windward all day. I reckon you just need more light air canvas you can put up. On my pahi it's 31 foot and has 27.5sqm of sail. A tiki21 is 19.5 . That was before I made the drifter. After that it became a lot more satisfying to sail!

    • @BalkanShipyards
      @BalkanShipyards 2 дня назад

      You are bang brah! Donnow how??? Yet it's very lumpy here, shacking my rig and bashing my hulls. Still testing stuff, taking it easy, I expect off the wind she will take off... That's what I designed her for truly, just too much going on now, but we gonna test her hard. I couldn't shunt her on the dry, so I cut the masts down, it helped, but on the water Shunting is easy, now I'm sorry... I reduced SA from 20 to 18 square meters, fucked up.... Anyway great boat, so smooth, now back to the drawing board.... Time will tell... Keep Shunting Dominic Balkan Shipyards

      @@BalkanShipyards hmm what about a drifter jib flying free sheeted to the bow? controversal but I know some junk riggers do carry such a sail and use it for windward in light air. I certainly would. I love sailing in light air - with enough canvas. If you can get a decent speed you can cover a lot of distance in great comfort. it won't feel so sloppy if you can go a bit faster. Another idea I've been considering, since I stuck a yard on my drifter that was too big... is great big really light boomless lug sail. Kinda like on a sailau but no boom, so it's just one spar. Another possibility would be the sri lanka style, with a sprit. Those look huge. Of course,, switch back to the junk once it gets to 15...

    • @BalkanShipyards
      @BalkanShipyards День назад

      Taking the Junk off is a mess Dominic... Too many lines, too much stuff, it's almost impossible. Very heavy too... Getting up a nother sail without taking down the junk will take a lot of thinking. My head stay goes down by the yard, so it's no good, the only place would be, on deck between the hulls, now we also need a mast.... Will see bud, if you get any ideas send them over.... Sounds like you changed then name of the proa... This is so cool man.. Super amazing.. Happy watching the vid. For sure a great boat... Just a few thoughts I have are, ama and Vaka have pronounced rocker and rightfully so to work the lumpy seas... on anole I made the ama with much less rocker than the main hull. I noticed when Lucky Pigeon was backwinded with an ama to leeward that had more pronounced rocker than the main hull, the boat tracked so perfect, it really accelerated and went super straight through the chop. So, my conclusion was that the leeward hull should have more rocker than the windward hull because L Pigeon main hull had heavy rocker but the ama was shorter with eleven more rocker. In your case that would mean a flatter ama and main hull as is. Thought I would share because when I saw your ama in the shop in another vid I remember thinking how much curve it had like a banana, but you know not even that much, but definitely rocker in there. I haven't finished Anole yet, but am super curious about how a flatter ama and a more curved main hull will be. Also if you made a Harry Proa out of this one with a fat ama that was flat and longer... oh man I think you could sail around the world. Even put your original Crystal Clear hull on windward... you would have sooo much displacement and deck area. These home build multi-hulls are infinite in possibility, it just rattles my brain , but I love it. Anyway, thanks for the inspirations always and sharing the stuff. Its great.

    • @BalkanShipyards
      @BalkanShipyards 13 дней назад

      Interesting thoughts Zack, yet gone down this path too long and far for radical changes... Harry Proas are weird and too much weight to windward changes from Pacific to Atlantic or what ever else has been invented.... (there's another type they call Indian Proa which is some weird concept that I cant remember...) So yea rocker of ama VS Vaka that I will look into, the best would be making small models ant testing them. But I'm going to reinforce a rudder! Hope I get it right this time, please read the reply I wrote to Dominic Tarr, I explained why it probably bent... I hope I get it right without going overboard in weight..... Welcome to the club! I guess that shaft was a little skinny. Hmm, though I notice it compressed there... probably where it goes through the support right? like it pressed against the guide and started to flatten it, and then when that happens it becomes narrower and a weak point. What if you just poured some hardened epoxy down there so that section is solid all the way through and can't compress? But anyway, yeah a multihull seems to go from very little force on the rudder when smooth sailing to really massively more force! but the most is when you are surfing down a wave, trying to hold it straight! you might normally be sailing along at 7knots, then surfing a wave... i've seen (momentarily) 15 knots on my gps while surfing. aerodynamic/hydrodynamic forces are proportional to the square of the velocity, so doubling the speed quadruples the force. Hmm so if it bent going 7 knots, I think you need to make it 8 times stronger so it will survive 15

      Yea, messy stuff.... you probably got the figures right mate.... Anyway, it was a balanced rudder, made so I could get more area for a bigger sail. I hated it, zero feel!!! Balanced rudders suck!!! their leading edge bites and they fly over. So that got cut off! so less area now, less biting and spinning onto 90 degrees now.... I will push it up about 10 cm reducing leverage, giving the bad water a harder time bending it again. Finally I'm going to weld another pipe inside both my rudders with a thicker wall, see how that works.... Then maybe think about the metal frame at the bottom connected to the hull... I may be adding much bigger backing plates inside the hull.... Anyway, boat sails great for first time, very pleased. Keep Shunting, bro BSY

      @@BalkanShipyards oh interesting! actually that happened to me with the latest iteration of my self steering (which isn't a video yet, but soon) I wanted a more powerful servo fin so I gave it some balance... it worked at small angles, but at big angles it jammed on and then went hard to the side. I disagree balanced rudders are bad... too much balance is bad. I'm gonna just cut off some of the balance. Enough balance to make a lighter helm, but enough trail so that the flow will turn it back to center on it's own and you'll have some feel. Definitely eager to see Crystal Clear sailing! Winter is starting here...

    So great to see the boat underway. And cruising with dolphins! I can remember petting them as they rode my bow wave on a crossing from Cabo San Lucas to Mazatlan Mexico. Dolphins and whales are so intelligent. I believe that as you sail through the Med toward the straights leading to the Atlantic the orcas are going to know not to bother your boat. I think that they will recognize that you’re different than most humans.

    • @BalkanShipyards
      @BalkanShipyards 15 дней назад

      Wow, never touched one, though I think they like sail boats, since in all my cruising many have followed me on my mono, but even more come since I've been sailing proas. Big groups that stay for a long way, I suppose they see something different, that is more interesting.... I also feel Orcas will let me go, it's the teenagers that chew up rudders, so In my case one of the babysitters will tell'em "this one needs to far, leave it's rudders alone!" I hope you're well John, may the Force b with u C u later on.... Keep Shunting, Balkan Shipyards

    Maybe you need to get some rubber (bicycle inner tubes?) to put between the aka's and the deck planks to reduce the squeaking, I hope it's not as bad in person as it was on camera. other than that everything's looking great 👍🎉 you seem to be making nice progress in lightish airs.
